December 30th, 2013

Last night and today the barometer went high, the weather went cold and the fishing slowed.  We had 24-28 below this morning and it didn’t break zero all day.  But I plowed spots and pulled 8 houses today.  Making good ice where I have it uncovered, but under the snow was little change..  this is going to be a long process folks.

We are letting up to 3/4 ton vehicles on the roads to a certain points where we have them blocked off with cones.  Still no wheelhouses yet with pickups, mainly because there is no way they are going to get off the roads a safe distance to keep the flooding away from the roads.    Portables must park on the side of the road and walk off 75 ft to fish.  Those roads are all I have to operate on and I’m not going to have them wrecked for my customers.

I’m doing the best I can and we are slowly making headway, but it is on house at a time, a 75 by 150 ft plowed area for each and still trying to extend the roads out farther everyday to have them make ice.  We actually are doing really well compared to most, but that doesn’t mean everything is ok.  So have patience…

Today as fishermen were leaving for the weekend we heard some reports of big Walleyes caught and released.  Saturday evening as the cold front came thru the was a fair amount of activity.  Still some big Northerns being caught also.

Just before the weather change we had some freezing mist for about an hour so when the blustery winds came we had little of no drifting on the lake.   With this cold weather I’m hoping the snow settled enough before that the cold will go thru it and start making ice.  Still anywhere north of Pope’s,  Gull, and Spider  areas there are areas of 9-10 inch ice with snow and slush.  It is really limiting where we normally go yet and I’m not going to take chances like that.

Hopefully the next few days of cold will give us that little extra ice we need.

Fishing was pretty good today.  Mainly a lot of Perch, (small) for most.  But there were some more big Northerns caught.  Most Walleyes caught were too small, but a few in the slot were kept.

I spent the day getting roads ready for the wind and cold, plowed areas off to put more houses on.  Set up the road stakes on the roads.  We are as ready as will be.  The warmer weather settled the snow some and tonight before the winds picked up we had some freezing mist.  I’m hoping it will cap the snow somewhat and we will not have as much drifting out there.  That  would be a treat!   Going into the deep freeze for a few days..it should help improve the ice conditions.

Overnight and today fishing activity picked up.  more reports of Walleyes at night and lots of Perch today, although most Perch were small and not keep-able. One rental did keep 15 Perch which was ok.  The highlight was a 42 inch 21 lb  Northern caught by one of our privates.  With all the small Perch and the shallower water we are in due to poor ice conditions farther out, it would be a good idea to target them.

This cold weather coming is going to probably shut down the bite, but will maybe get us over the edge a little in the thin ice areas on our deeper reefs and allow me to get out there and establish some more roads without using the Jeep, (which would be nice!)  But it will still be awhile before i get houses out there.

Today the Perch were biting but that was all.  It seems that the Walleyes at at night or hardly none at all.  But it is at the least improving over the first week out there. With the weather changes and up and downs in temps it’s a wonder they are biting at all.

The ice out farther is not doing anything  despite what cold weather we had.  The roads are making ice and anywhere I’ve uncovered it its improving but it’s going to be along while before it improves.  We either need a big wind to harden the snow so the cold can go thru or a good warm-up and settle it down.

I pulled some more houses today in the thicker ice, but for as rough as it is I’m beginning to wonder if it is worth it.  The time it takes to clear an area and the toll it takes on the equipment is barely worth it.   Tomorrow I’m going to  spend time clearing more areas in thinner ice where it is smoother and letting them sit and freeze before I pull many more.

Today we are going to start to pull some more houses.   Both rentals and  privates.  We will be pulling to Pope’s, Gull Reefs, that’s it.   I have roads to Ray’s, Graveyard and NE Spider Reefs, but there is not enough ice off the sides of the roads out that far to put houses on yet, let alone letting anyone drive it.  There is a lot of areas out there that are flooded and freezing. Soon the roads I plowed with the Jeep and Land Crusier will have enough ice and the flooded spots will be froze and we will be able to put some houses out in those areas.  This year we are going to be clearing and area around each house before it is placed for two reasons.  let the ice float up to prevent flooding as much and to allow the cold to make more ice around the house. It is going to slow down the process of getting houses out so be patient!!  There will be extra charges for plowing also so you expect to see that on your bills.

We will let 1/2 ton vehicles or smaller drive to Gull and Pope’s.  No wheelhouses except pulled with ATV, and you will need a spot plowed off the roads for a fee, or have an ATV with tracks and ski’s for the wheelhouse.  portable fishermen will be required to fish at least 100 feet off the road also.

As far as fishing goes, I will do my best to get you in a good area, but complaints about the fishing results should be directed to the MN DNR, and Mille Lacs and WI Bands.  Both of their methods of “mis-management” of this fishery are to blame.  The more of you that do that, the more things might change. Things are tough enough for us resorts right now  that we don’t need to hear anymore.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Was quiet out there today,  Some customers came in at noon and rented a house for a couple days, and I have another rented tomorrow am.  We’ll see how they do.

Got the roads cleaned up and plowed a few spots for houses today.  We are going to start to pull some of the people in the list starting Thursday. It is going to be a much slower process this year with have to clear areas for the houses out there.  I decided to do that instead of the way we used to just so they make thicker ice around the house, so don’t push me.

Fishermen have been calling inquiring about wheelhouses and trucks.  It’s not going to happen yet.  Not until I have better ice off the sides of the roads. I’ll let you know when.

December 23rd, 2013

Last night we got 3 inches of snow and more NW winds, but the roads had “floated” up so  most of it blew off, except for the edges.  I was able to get a few rentals out today, Then spent the rest of the day cleaning roads as much as I could getting ready for the next 1-3inches of snow on Christmas Eve.

I heard from the office that some people had called saying they had heard I went down out there………News to me!! I didn’t, am not going to…..done it too long to take a chance now.

We are going to start pulling those that  want to go, but it is going to be in in close.  Some  like that and some don’t.  My suggestion for those that want to be deeper reefs, just wait a bit.  Or if you want to go it will be in a place you haven’t been accustomed to.

With the snow we have and ice conditions I will do all I can, but for those that know me…. this one is going to be along way from what you have been used to  the last few..  it’s been a long time since it started like this.  Reminds me of the late 60’s, early 70’s out there.

December 22nd, 2013

Spent the day plowing and making more areas to put houses in close where the ice is ok.  We will not be going out to the deeper reefs for awhile and if this snow doesn’t stop hitting us every other day,  I don’t know when we’ll get there.

We are pulling rentals tomorrow for what I have rented and making spots for some of the private houses also. Talking to the DNR creel clerk tonite and telling him what I’ve got done so far he said we are doing better than most with roads and distance out into the main lake.  it is going to be a very different winter here this year on the ice,  I have change all the roads I have so far to be closer to the fishing areas and all the houses will be close to the roads.  That is something I haven’t done since the 70’s, but it is the only way to be out there this year.

No one out fishing today and I’m sure with Christmas coming there will be some quiet time. That will maybe give me some more time to get things ready out there.  Doesn’t look like we’ll have much of a Christmas here this year………

December 21st, 2013

Today we had fishermen out there looking.  They found them in the deeper water, which is a good sign. the problem is getting to the areas, establishing roads,  so we can get going. I do have roads out there that ATV’s and sleds can go on to get there, but there will definitely be no driving there yet.  the first 1/2 mile or so I have been out with one of the Ford’s plowing and will be letting smaller vehicles go in those  areas, but portables will still have to stay 100 feet of the roads.

We’ll get going better this next week providing we don’t get alot more snow, but we will not be getting house out to our deeper reefs for awhile yet.
