December 17th, 2020

Today I staked roads to the east and west side of Gull Reef and the NW side of Popes. Ice thickness ranged from as little as 5″ to 7.5″. so we are making a little progress.  For now I am going to continue with walking only for the weekend. The majority of our ice this year is crystal clear and smooth. Most of it you could skate on, so cleats are a must.

Tomorrows weather will be a little blustery with a SE wind, some snow, maybe some sleet. Then switching to a fairly strong NW wind and letting up overnight. Saturday will be sunny and highs in the low twenties, so weather should be OK for a walk.  Actually a little snow and freezing rain that is forecasted would make it a little easier to move around. but it will also hide the thinner spots. So I’m going to hold off on ATV’s until we check things farther out. As once you let ATV’s go, distance isn’t an issue for most and with the ice farther out that is not checked out first can lead to problems. There was alot of areas that I kept an eye on during the freezing process where ice movement left open spots that will be considerably less ice than you would want to venture on now.  In a few days things will improve.

We will be open Saturday morning. Let’s get this season started!  And bring your ice cleats!

Keep a Tight Line!   Be Safe!
