Yesterday was our first day open and allowing fishermen out of the access. And a pretty good day it was. Many fishermen sent me pictures of some pretty nice Walleye and quite a few “keepers” were caught.
Because of it freezing while very windy a week and a half ago some areas had slush under the ice. Especially on the NW sides of the shallower reefs where is pushed in more. But alot of other areas were just fine. Most common ice depth was 8 inches, some place a little more. So it was plenty good for walking, ATV’s and snowmobiles.
I went out farther checking ice conditions as when daylight came yesterday we seen where the main lake ice had pushed during the high winds the last couple days. In a line somewhere off Big Point down to Hennepin island and SW towards Otto’s Point, (all to the NW of us) were piles and areas of ice overlapping other ice. Hennepin Island is about 20 times it’s normal size due to ice pushed up and around it. It’s quite a sight. Where the ice was pushed up and layered there was spots where it was sinking and flooding so I stayed away from them. Its going to be awhile before we make our way thru that stuff. There were areas like that as far in as the Graveyard Reef, NW of Spider Island and North of North Twin so that will be off limits for awhile.
For the weekend we will be Portables with ATV/Snowmobile, and walking only, NO Side by Sides. NO small Wheelhouses. Everyone will get a map when they check in so they know what we have checked. I will post pics of some of the catches Sunday on the Lyback’s Ice Fishing Facebook page for those interested.
Keep a Tight Line! Eddy
