Over the weekend I would say overall it was pretty slow for most. The highlight was that the weather made it nice to be out there. Some anglers did OK and most of them were on the shallower reefs. Some nice C/R Walleye pictures were sent in so there was still some activity. For the amount of fishermen out there compared to the results it was slow.
This weekend I heard more comments than ever about the water clarity. Some anglers were seeing the bottom in 30 plus feet, which has been unheard of in the past. I think with the dry summer with little run-off and the drop in water level there was not as many nutrients and micro-organisms introduced into the lake as we would normally have. With the Zebra Mussels we have now, improved sewer systems around the lake and the water that naturally settles as winter goes on it has changed it dramatically. I like clean water, but that does not mean it necessarily good for the food chain when it comes the fishery. Water can get to the point where it is “sterile” and does not provide nutrients for the bottom of the food chain. I don’t know if thats possible here as I am not a expert on any of it. But I know I have never seen it like this in my entire life on this lake.
We are making some more moves this week with some of the rentals and going to new areas if the rough ice doesn’t get in our way. This year when the lake broke open after intial ice over it made for some very difficult going in some areas and we changed alot of what we would normally do because of it. So it’s sort of pick and choose how you get thru it.
We are getting closer to having the new office with ADA mens/womens bathrooms and showers completed so at the least customers can stop in and see what is on tap for next season. It will be a welcome addition for all of our customers. It will have seating for 24 people along with our office being moved there also. The walls will have pictures of the history of this place that is well over 100 years old and it’s 68 years in the Ice Fishing Business. It’s been a goal of mine for many years that will finally get accomplished.
Keep a Tight Line!
