Anglers reports out yesterday were mixed from slow to pretty good. All depths seemed to have activity.
Ice conditions are very slowly improving. we checked ice depths on our roads and off the roads in the snow. (This year this will be our third time, so we know exactly what it is, how much it’s gaining.) Roads I opened 2 weeks ago are averaging 14″- 15″, but just off the same roads in the snow ice depths range from 11″-13″. Roads I opened just last week are 13″-14″ while off the roads remained 11″-13″. Roads opened in the last couple days and areas where houses are spotted are 11″-13″. With this years clear brittle ice I’m holding off on letting excess weight run on the roads. (Keep in mind normally 14″-15″ of ice is recommended for small cars and light trucks), Not 1/2 ton trucks that can weigh 6000 lb. pulling a single axle wheelhouse that can weigh up to 5000lb. in tow. (add up the numbers)….. some may think it’s OK.. I do not,
Years ago when there was just one or two that traveled the roads it wasn’t a big deal. Now with the numbers of wheelhouses and trucks run the roads when you do let them go, the ice roads with this years clear brittle ice is an accident waiting to happen in my opinion. We are going to wait until I see 16″+ on the ice roads before we let 1/2 tons and single axles out. and with colder weather on the way late next week it will probably happen.
I will keep with an approx. 5000lb weight limit over the weekend. Single axle wheelhouses pulled with ATV’s or side by sides. and smaller vehicles. I will be pulling houses that I can with the Land Cruiser and will be keeping bigger trucks off the ice until after the weekend. Ice depths will improve some and the larger houses will go. Some areas with drift are experiencing flooding in spots out in the open, but most portable people with ATV, and snowmobiles can get almost anywhere. We have alot of room for wheelhouse camping in our parking area on shore for those that would like to.
Keep a Tight Line! Eddy
