March 12th, 2015 – evening

The ice on our end where we go turned to all water on top like I thought. This afternoon my grand daughter and i went out on a ATV and there was 2-5 inches of water almost everywhere so we are going to wait till it goes down the next couple days before we let fishermen out of our access and then it will probably be ATV only.  So that means sometime after this coming weekend. It will give me a little more tome to make the ATV bridge to cross the pressure ridge we are dealing with.

For those that are familiar with our “Block Party”, (it is a day when we go out with ATV’s and scour our areas we fish and pick up any leftover blocks or debris that was left and buried under the snow). After it melts for a while it is easy to see and easier to get.  It is something we have done here since the 70’s.  It is going to be next weekend.

The east side of the lake north of Big Point to Malmo did not see the ice ridges that the rest of us has experienced so check the resorts that way for access. until then….

Yesterday the snow really started melting out there and the ice has water on it almost everywhere.  Today’s forecasted temps and warm south winds will melt the last of the snow and the water will start looking for spots to go down.  Already yesterday the “white”ice in the first mile, (rough ice that had melted and got rained on and re-froze on top back in December) was starting to soften up and I’m thinking it is going to be pretty slushy that first mile the next few days until it melts down.

We are still driving, (4WD) only out there, but it will be a day by day thing so call ahead before coming.  Also we are not getting out to the “Tullibee Hole” due to the pressure ridge block access. But we are getting out to the NE side of the Graveyard Reef, in the 30 plus mud and getting Tullibee, and some Perch there.  The bigger Perch still haven’t moved in yet.

I’m working on my ATV bridge but will not have it done for this weekend, but as wet and slushy as it is going to be the next few days it won’t matter.  We will still have plenty of ice next week for that.  Still now there is well over 30 inches of ice and no signs of honeycombing so we will still have time.

Went out today and checked the pressure ridge from as far as Otto’s Point to Big Point and there is nothing good to report about it.  It is piled up on one side or another and a lot of broken ice.  Unfortunately at this time of year especially with no chance of freezing in the forecast it would be foolish to attempt to bridge it for vehicle traffic. Despite the thick ice that is still there.  So we will be limited to where we go. And with the way the weather is going it won’t be long and we will not be driving anything but sleds and ATV’s.

It is too bad the weather changed so drastically.  We would have been out there a few more weeks.. We went out today and picked up the rest of the road stakes and cones and in a week or so as the top melts down get anything else left out there.  I’m building a portable ATV bridge that will span a good spot in the ridge so we can ge over it and out there. And if the ice quits pushing in the next couple days we might let some of you try it out….for those of you that still want to go.    🙂
