Yesterday’s  fishing reports from customers were pretty good for most. A lot of Perch action and small Walleye.  The highlights were the numerous large Northern Pike that were C/R.  I received pictures of Northern ranging from 29″ to over 40″. I’m sure mostly because of the areas we have the rentals they are seeing them.  After the reopening of spearing on Mille Lacs a few years ago there was a slaughter of big Pike.  It’s nice to see them recovering somewhat.  Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against spearing and am not condemning those that do, Just the way is was done that one year without good regulation was a joke in my opinion.

The warmer weather has not improved ice conditions much in fact there has been more areas flooding, (in the long run will be good when they freeze).  But for now it’s a mess in some spots.  We are forecasted to receive 4-6 more inches of snow the next couple days with some cold weather behind it for a few days.  I am going to wait and see what things look like after it and make decisions for the weekend then.  For the meantime I am limiting traffic to 5000 GVW vehicles only.

The problem is where to put houses with the ice conditions we currently have.  Some of the “normal” areas we start with are totally inaccessible because of slush below the ice.  Some areas have flooded and we are waiting for it to freeze to get over the top of it. Areas farther out do not have enough ice to establish a good road that without breaking it up and flooding. Mainly because of the weight of the snow on only 12-13″ of ice. Then waiting for it to freeze in order to finish it.  We were fortunate to have a crack that flooded out over a two mile stretch that ran out along some good areas that I established a road on over the weekend.  We just might be starting there, we’ll see.

Keep a Tight Line!
