Over the weekend a few anglers came out and tried for Perch, Northern, Tullibee.  Sunday as the weather warmed was when most showed up.

Same story for Perch, with alot being caught. But picking thru 20 or so for a 10″ keeper.  Lots of 7-8″ Perch out there now so there is some hope for a future.

Tullibee are just not out there yet as there is no evidence of a hatch in the mud of the Tullibee Hole. Tomorrow when it warms up a little more and softens the snow, I am going out and plowing a road from the east side of it , (NW of the Graveyard), to the far west edge NW of the Banana), just so anglers can move and look for them.  These days with Pan-optics,  etc…  it shouldn’t be hard to find out.

Back in the  70’s when I was looking for Tullibee this time of year I used a jig stick that had 5 jigs on it, spaced 3 feet apart. More than likely illegal  😉   But It was a simple way to find out how deep they were as I was looking.  I would crisscross the area in line 100 yards apart and in most cases find them. Sometimes they were on the far east side of the area, other times the west.  Very few times they started in the deepest areas.  There was never any consistency from year to year.  Over the years it seemed to start more in the deepest parts.  Not sure why, but I think it was from the hatches getting smaller over the years with the cleaner water we have now.

The highlight of the weekend was yesterday an angler C/R a 37.5″ Northern Pike estimated around 16lbs.  I expect that action to pick up as they are coming in to shallow for the Perch.

I will see how it goes with the warmer weather this week and post on Wednesday/Friday. I’m planning on staying open thru the weekend if the snow melt is slow out there.  But if it really warms fast there will be alot of water in spots.  Call the day before you plan to come up.

Keep a Tight Line
