Yesterday the bite was pretty quiet with the high barometer Lots of small Perch and Walleye. Not many fishermen even reported so that usually means a slow day.
We pulled 10 more customers houses and got them set up. Barring any snowstorms everything should be up and running at the “normal” pace by mid week and the weekend. It has been a late start again compared to “normal”, (if there even is one anymore), and I appreciate our customers patience.. Even though weather determines how and when the lake freezes, there is one thing will not change with me. It’s how soon I pull out houses and on what ice thickness I pull them out on. There will also be an order to it as always.
Ice depths under the ones we pulled yesterday were about 14″ so the cold weather is not having much an effect on freezing under the snow. Those same areas on Monday had 13″. On the roads where the ice is uncovered we are making ice. We need continued cold and more ice. Where 14″ of ice with little or no snow normally is a good thing. With 12″ of snow on top it’s not enough in my book. I’ve seen many years where it’s started like this and didn’t end up well. Let’s hope this isn’t one of them.
This weekend for wheelhouses we will be letting Paid Seasonal customers with single axle wheelhouses with lighter 1/2 tons, (basically with a combined weight of 10,000lbs or less.) Single vehicles weighing approx. 6000lbs or less. As the roads build more ice I’m planning for the tandems to be able to get out next weekend. After that is accomplished we will open for the “weekend wheelhouse” people.
Keep a Tight Line! Eddy
